About Us

At NPS Shoes, our story is one of craftsmanship, resilience, and a deep respect for tradition. For over a century, we’ve been shaped by the rhythms of factory life in Northamptonshire—England’s historic shoemaking heartland since the 13th century. This region’s rich natural resources, from oak bark for tanning to local leather markets, laid the foundation for a legacy we’re proud to carry forward today.

But our beginnings were modest—and born out of necessity. In the late 1800s, shoemaking was a precarious trade. Most shoemakers worked from home, paid only for finished pieces collected sporadically by passing agents. Income was uncertain, and job security almost non-existent. Determined to change this, five men from the village of Wollaston came together to form a co-operative: the Northamptonshire Productive Society (NPS). Run by the workers themselves, NPS was built on fairness, stability, and shared purpose. Locals affectionately called them “the Duffers,” and their first workshop was nothing more than a dove house on Thrift Street.

Fortune smiled on them early. Their very first order—army boots for the government—carried them through that critical first year and set the tone for decades of craftsmanship to come.

Today, NPS Shoes continues to honor that heritage. Every pair we make reflects over a hundred years of skill, integrity, and dedication to quality. We remain committed to the principles that started it all: fair work, exceptional craftsmanship, and shoes built to stand the test of time.

Because for us, shoemaking isn’t just a job—it’s a story still being written, one step at a time.
